University educators and course developers who are:

  1.     Interested in creating or improving large-scale online courses.
  2.     Looking for ways to increase student engagement.
  3.     Curious about how to estimate and manage student workload.

Participants can have varying levels of experience — from exploring online teaching for the first time to having run MOOCs or hybrid courses.

Description by Host:

The session will focus on sharing best practices in facilitating and teaching online courses. Aalto students like taking online courses that they can complete at their own pace whenever they want. At School of Chemical Engineering we run a few large online courses with hundred of students. The approach seems to work well. However, the question how to effectively keep students engaged and motivated remains open. Academic Staff who teach online courses or are interested in developing online courses in the future can join this session. On the session we will exchange our experiences in online teaching and focus on what works well at our universities.


Agenda:
  1. Introduction (max. 10 min; led by Unite! Networking Hub team) - Welcome, brief overview of Unite! and Networking Hub, Introduction of Host
  2. Main Discussion (45 min; facilitated by Host) - Diving into the topic for a substantive and engaging conversation:  practicalities of organizing large online courses, promoting student engagement in an online environment, evaluating and managing student workload
  3. Conclusion with Survey (5 min; led by Unite! Networking Hub team) - Wrap-up with a short feedback survey to gather insights from participants

What is the Unite! Networking Hub?


The Unite! Networking Hub is a virtual space designed for academic and administrative staff from Unite! ’s partner universities. It’s more than just a networking event, it’s a collaborative hub where colleagues come together to connect and engage with peers facing similar challenges, share best practices and tools, exchange experiences and ideas, and foster a strong cross-institutional community spirit. Whether you're looking to solve a problem, showcase an initiative, or simply talk about your day-to-day work with someone who understands, the Networking Hub is for you.


How does it work?


  • 9 sessions per year, one per month (starting in October 2025)
  • Held on the third Tuesday of each month at 13:00 CET
  • Each session lasts approximately one hour
  • Hosted on a virtual platform
